Funny, that's the first thing I thought of yesterday. Pity you can't send it back in time to Monday night

I don't get why they make public comments at all. If a journalist comes at them for a comment about any issue all they need say is "don't fall for it again" with a smile and keep walking. Every time they speak they just provide ammunition for the libs, one small stuff up yesterday and the libs dragged out all the big names.

I hate to say it, but our Kev's being sucked into his own moral vacuum right now. Why can't the ALP just stand up for what they believe is right, rather than trying to second guess uninformed public opinion?

All Kev needed to do yesterday was question whether the Lib's stance meant that they now supported an introduction of the death penalty. But no ... he gets caught up in worries of Bali Bombing sensitivity crap, which should never have been an issue in the first place.

I don't care so much whether this election is lost or won - what I care about is whether it's fought for what we believe in. If the general public wishes to avoid all moral responsibility for the country, so be it ... what's important is that the ALP actually gives them an alternative choice.

Small target me-too-ism didn't work in 2001 and it didn't work in 2004. Why does the ALP think it's going to work now??

Rudd will win if he doesn't make another meaningless, pointless apology for doing nothing in particular before the election.

Apologies are lame

John Howard would never apologise for anything.

It sucks having to choose between 2 conservative parties. So I'll be voting Green with preferences to ALP. I know! I know! But the ALP is now almost identical to the Libs. BRING BACK KEATING!

I'm running away to live in the swamp if that slimy toad gets back in.

Rudd has reason to believe that mimicking the ugly, inhumane, 'strict' policies of the Right won't have any effect on the polls. Theoretically he's only alienating us, and he knows at worst we'll put his party second-last.

So far it's been the secret to his success.

Where this gets interesting is that the media is getting sick of it — the journos want a bare-knuckled fight. It's good for business, and fun besides. The polls have not significantly changed since March. So (however premeditatedly) they're orchestrating a change in the prevailing mood. The swinging voters don't care about his me-too-ism, but they are highly sensitive to atmospheric changes.

It was inevitable, and in fact it was supposed to happen during the campaign, which is supposed to be happening already. It's ironic that Rudd's Achilles heel is turning out to be his erstwhile shield.

For the record I don't think he's in trouble yet, though. These 12-point margins were always fanciful, and I suspect the ALP has a big circle around 4 on their whiteboard.

I would offer words of encouragement. Don’t fuck me is negative with a hint of positiveness. Hopeful if used as Downer negation. Fuck being positive
I like KR trying to be all things to all people, and finding balance along the way.

It was clumsy policy & clumsy politics. They would've been far better off quietly restating their opposition to capital punishment but announcing something like an initiative to develop a regional justice forum with a focus on developing proper standards of judicial review, esp. in regard to appeals processes. Focus on the general standards & application of justice (which just about everyone can agree upon) rather than the outcomes in particular instances (which simply brings out the most extreme of emotions).
As far as swings go, Id' suggest they'll be hoping for slightly more than a 4 in the HoR & much, much bigger away from the Coalition (if not directly to them) in the Senate. A broadly uniform swing of 4 might get them in, but might also leave them short or (not so well) hung.

Me too anonymous. I'd much prefer this man to remain in a position of leadership.

Mr Howard condemned as "extraordinary" Labor's view that the Bali bombers' lives should be spared. "The idea that we would plead for the deferral of executions of people who murdered 88 Australians is distasteful to the entire community," Mr Howard said.

"I find it impossible myself, as an Australian, as Prime Minister, as an individual, to argue that those executions should not take place when they have murdered my fellow countrymen and women," he said.

Absolutely right, Anon. Stabbing the brown folk through the heart and making them martyrs will really take them down a peg or two.

Not to mention bring back all the people who were killed in Bali. O happy day, etc.

By that reasoning ANYONE who kills an Australian citizen should be put to death. You can't pick and choose you're either for it or against it.

How about the police who will be executing our Australian drug dealers Mr. Howard? Should we execute them too?
'I find it impossible ... to argue that those executions should not take place when they have murdered my fellow countrymen and women'
And all those in Australian prisons, convicted of murder, but spared from death by our constitution, which presumably represents Australian values? Kill them?
'Kill them. Kill them all.'

When it comes to Labor and the 2007 election, I think we have to hold our noses and hope for the best.
I think most people on the left will be disappointed by Labor. Most so-called Labor Governments are pretty disappointing these days.
On the other hand, the two main parties have at least one main difference, namely, IR. That alone makes it worth booting Howard out.
Also, I'd hope that Rudd engaged in less towel-head bashing/support for Alan Jones, etc.
Finally, should Labor win this election, there's every chance they'll face a hostile Senate. If this eventuates, a double dissolution election could follow, giving the minor parties a chance to make serious progress, and allowing us voters to clear out some of the dead wood in the major parties.
In short, the slogan for Rudd should still be - 'Don't Fuck It Up. Or Else. We're Not Above Having You Tarred and Feathered, and Run Out of Canberra, If You Continue To Be Rodent-Like.'.

By the way, lamera - don't stress. Studies have shown that it's not until 19 and a half that human beings become unloveable, so you've got plenty of time.

i'm worried about Kev losing the election and gaining a gut.

he looks lately like he's swallowed a rodent too many, and that howard rat is looking like a spritely old twig in comparison.

has anyone else noticed that recently kev seems to be channeling his inner kim?

kev: the biggest loser?

What a sad little piece of dried copha our PM really is. Bereft of any life or future vision he embraces as his mantra the only thing left - the spectre of death. And I thought the sickle was a communist symbol.

It seemed such a perfect opportunity to ask the obvious question. "In what sense is the PM opposed to the death penalty, if he approves of people being executed?"

I agree with your question, Ben.

88 Australians. What if it was 80? What if it was 8?

What if they were killed by a negligent accident, but the responsible party showed no remorse?

And surely, as has been pointed out, those carrying heroin into Australia have as little regard for the lives of other Australians as any bomber?

Kevin didn't say his minister was wrong. He said he may have been insensitive. Big whoopee. I can see why the Herald Sun didn't run with a "Politician Insensitive" banner.
